Cartagena, Days 8 & 9
This is a short one folks, as we spent the majority of the time either relaxing on by the rooftop pool of a luxury hotel while sipping endless coco-lemonade, which are INCREDIBLE. Cartagena is a beautiful colonial city on the coast, with many narrow alleys with charming balconies atop fancy shops. Our hotel was located just outside the ‘Old Town’, the best bit of the city surrounded by old walls, which is where we spent most of our time, when we weren’t by the pools sipping delicious beverages being circled by turkey vultures (which actually flew quite close a few times).
Here are some lovely pictures of our stay:
One particular highlight in Cartagena was our first night out. We went to a great Turkish restaurant which did amazing cocktails. I had one that was named the flintstone and it was announced with a ‘Yabadaba-doo-da’ as it arrived in it’s stone bowl. One of the tastiest cocktails I’ve ever had. We went a bit mad on the cocktails and headed for the closest salsa bar for a beer where people were dancing fantastically on the street. There was even a romantic dance between an elegant lady in a red dress and a guy dressed as spiderman… unforgettable.
Book Interlude
9/10 – ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep’ – Philip K. Dick
I was lucky enough to finish this book mid coco-lemonade sip, so my review may be biased, but I think this book is brilliant. Whilst ‘How to Stop Time’ was an easy read and very well written, this felt a league above in terms of its originality. The whole world was created with lots of complex factors whilst seamlessly being a part of the story, without long, boring explanations. The humor was brilliant and the book was kind of a moral philosophical debate that might happen in the future whilst being a cool action story. I’m looking forward to reading more of his books and, possibly, becoming a ‘Dickhead’ in the future.
The next installment will be a special birthday edition at Archipelago San Bernado, where we stay on a tiny island, half of which is taken up by our small hostel ‘Isla Roots’. We swim with plankton that glow in the dark, visit the most densely populated island in the world and see sharks. Very exciting stuff.
2024 Update:
Sorry dearest readers, I was young and naive and didn’t complete the blog. The final section – Archipelago San Bernado, followed by the island of Providencia are incredible. San Bernado is BRILLIANT and absolutely peaceful and beautiful. Providencia is a schlep to get to but we both enjoyed it the most of the whole trip – absolutely gorgeous. I’m more sorry than you are that I didn’t write about them…
